SmartWay Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency honors companies for freight supply chain efficiency.

Kimberly-Clark Corporation was honored for the sixth time with a SmartWay Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for working with transportation providers to move goods in the cleanest, most energy-efficient way possible, while reducing the impacts of carbon pollution. Since joining the SmartWay program in 2006, Kimberly-Clark has more than doubled its use of intermodal transport, saving an estimated 72 million gallons of diesel and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 734,000 metric tons – the equivalent of taking 138,000 cars off the road for one year. The adoption of more efficient transport has also saved the company an estimated $415 million. “We’re proud to be recognized as a leader in reducing carbon pollution and for our ongoing commitment to energy efficiency,” says Scott DeGroot, vice president of transportation for Kimberly-Clark. “In 2014 alone, using more intermodal transportation to move our products saved the company an estimated 10.2 million gallons of fuel and prevented an estimated 200 million pounds of greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere.” Kimberly-Clark is one of 11 companies to receive this distinction, representing the best environmental performers of SmartWay’s nearly 3000 partners. The shipper and logistics Excellence Awardees were honored at U.S. EPA’s Technology Showcase held at the National Vehicle and Fuels Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, MI, on October 13, 2015. “EPA is pleased to honor these SmartWay Partners with a 2015 Excellence Award,” says Chris Grundler, director, EPA Office of Transportation & Air Quality. “Through their environmental leadership in the greener goods movement, each of these companies is demonstrating its commitment to our shared goal of a healthier, more sustainable future for the communities and families we serve.”
